“Cuba is not a threat. The threat is imperialism, which punishes, blockades, sanctions & persecutes peoples that refuse to submit.”
From the European Left Party Political Secretariat
The European Left Party firmly condemns the new escalation of political, judicial and media aggression by the United States against Cuba, now expressed through the criminal accusation against General of the Army Raúl Castro Ruz.
This new aggression forms part of the long-standing policy of hostility, interference and suffocation that the United States has maintained against Cuba for more than six decades: economic blockade, energy siege, financial persecution, extraterritorial sanctions, destabilisation campaigns and permanent threats against the sovereignty of the Cuban people.
The use of the US judicial system to persecute historic leaders of the Cuban Revolution constitutes a new attempt to criminalise Cuba’s independence and to try to break the sovereign will of a people that has chosen its own path.
The EL particularly denounces the extraterritorial nature of this offensive. The United States has no right to set itself up as the world’s tribunal or to use its institutions to intimidate sovereign States, condition their political processes or punish those who have defended national independence against imperialism.
This new manoeuvre comes in a context of intensifying threats against Cuba and a tightening of the economic, energy, commercial and financial blockade. While the Cuban people suffer the direct consequences of a deliberate policy of collective punishment, Washington attempts to present itself as an accuser, concealing its historical responsibility for the aggression against the island, the persecution of its economy and the deterioration of the living conditions of millions of people.
The European Left Party reaffirms its solidarity with Cuba and with its inalienable right to sovereignty and to the defence of that sovereignty. We demand the immediate and unconditional end of the criminal blockade and the energy siege, as well as Cuba’s removal from every arbitrary and illegitimate list drawn up by the United States, the cessation of extraterritorial sanctions and full respect for Cuban sovereignty.
We also call on the European Union and European governments not to remain silent in the face of this new aggression. Europe cannot continue to be subordinated to Washington’s foreign policy or look the other way while the basic principles of international law, the sovereignty of States and equality among peoples are being violated.
Cuba is not a threat. The threat is imperialism, which punishes, blockades, sanctions and persecutes peoples that refuse to submit.
The European Left Party will always stand on the side of sovereignty, peace, international justice and the dignity of the Cuban people.
