Hundreds of thousands take to the streets of London calling for a ceasefire

An estimated 500,000 people took the streets of London yesterday afternoon to call for a ceasefire in Gaza as the humanitarian crisis escalates and the numbers of civilian deaths sharply rises following Isreal’s bombing campaign in the wake of the October 7th Hamas attack.

The demonstration, called by the Palestinian Solidarity Campaign saw calls for a ceasefire from a number of Labour movement and trade union leaders.

John McDonnell MP addressed the huge crowd calling ceasefire in Gaza, an end to bombing, land invasion, blockade and for the release of the hostages. The former Shadow Chancellor called the killing of so many innocent civilians war crimes when reiterating the demand for a “ceasefire now.”

Apsana Begum MP demanded “nothing short of an immediate ceasefire and an end to the siege of Gaza.”

Richard Burgon MP demanded that the UK Government help save civilian lives by joining the international call for a ceasefire.

Diane Abbott MP spoke of the three thousand Palestinian children killed in the last three weeks, condemning the bombing and the labeling of all Palestinians in the north of Gaza as terrorists.

Zarah Sultana MP called on our political leaders to demand a ceasefire and not to be complicit in the killing of civilians.

Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP spoke of Britain’s historic responsibility to work towards peace.

Former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn MP read out a message from Palestinian activist and academic Dr Mustafa Barghouti and his call for an immediate ceasefire.

Andy McDonald MP spoke of the war crimes being committed in Palestine on an unprecedented scale and insisted that international law must be upheld.

RMT Union General Secretary Mick Lynch directly called on Keir Starmer to back the growing demand for an immediate ceasefire.

Libby Nolan, President of Britain’s largest union UNISON, directly called on the Government to push for a ceasefire for the creation of humanitarian corridors to allow aid into Gaza.
