“This is a vital moment to define policies which can tackle the alarming decline in UK prosperity. What are the solutions, and how can we persuade policy makers to implement them?”

By Professor Özlem Onaran & Patrick Allen, Progressive Economy Forum

Progressive Economy Forum and the University of Greenwich’s Centre of Political Economy, Governance, Finance and Accountability are delighted to bring you Progressive Economics 2023, a one day conference of debate, discussion and education on the challenges and issues facing modern economies.

The UK economy is in crisis. Battered by the global financial crisis and austerity policies, Brexit introduced new uncertainties affecting investment, growth, trade and finance.

In this weakened state, the UK was poorly prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic. While it is difficult to disentangle the effects of Covid-19 from EU withdrawal, as the pandemic ended the ongoing damage of Brexit became clearer. Similar economies have made rapid recoveries since 2021, but not the UK. And this is before we consider the cost of living crisis, post-Covid supply chain problems, the war in Ukraine, and the challenges of climate change.

This is a vital moment to define policies which can tackle the alarming decline in UK prosperity. What are the solutions, and how can we persuade policy makers to implement them? We have a mammoth task ahead of us, to rebuild the country and deal with the climate emergency, inequalities, and the care crisis.

Our task at this conference is to analyse the UK’s problems in their global context, and present solutions to rebuild the economy.

This conference follows the highly successful event that we held last year: Progressive Economics 2022. The conference was so popular that we were determined to repeat it, and make it an annual event. We are extremely lucky that University of Greenwich is once again hosting the conference at its iconic campus buildings.

This year there will be panels on the green, caring and just transition, inequalities, the cost-of-living crisis, Brexit, fiscal policy, monetary policy, industrial policy and policy coordination with MPs, academics, and researchers from think-tanks and civil society organisations.

Speakers include… Lord Robert Skidelsky, Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP, John McDonnell MP, Molly Scott Cato (Green Party & University of Roehampton), Will Hutton (The Observer), Frank van Lerven (World Bank), Stephany Griffith-Jones (Banco Central de Chile), Carys Roberts (IPPR), Ann Pettifor (Prime), Rebekah Diski (NEF), David Barmes (Positive Money), Faiza Shaheen (PEF), Peter Holmes (Trade Policy Observatory), Shreya Nanda (Social Market Foundation), Janet Williamson (TUC), Geoff Tily (TUC), Patrick Allen (PEF), Özlem Onaran (UoG), Danny Dorling (University of Oxford), Michael Jacobs (University of Sheffield), Guy Standing (SOAS), Susan Himmelweit (Open University), Stewart Lansley (University of Bristol), James Meadway (PEF), Jo Michell (UWE), Mehmet Ugur(UoG), Maria Nikolaidi (UoG), Rob Calvert Jump (UoG), Ben Tippet (UoG), and Alex Guschanski (UoG), among others.

The programme of the conference is here. Please register here. The recordings of the highly successful Progressive Economics 2022 conference with 500 delegates are here.

We hope you will enjoy the day, debating the crucial issues we face, and come away with innovative and practical solutions to deal with them.
