“This victory sends a powerful message to the world: Trump and his far-right allies across the globe can be beaten!”

This is a huge victory for everyone who believes in social progress and the fight against hunger, poverty and exploitation.

It is a victory for those fighting for equality, against racism and discrimination, and for a better future for all.

It is a victory for those determined to defend the Amazon rainforest and protect our planet at a time when the world faces an enormous battle against climate change.

It is a victory for the millions of ordinary Brazilians, the trade unions, social movements and grassroots organisations who have mobilised tirelessly since the first round to drive up voter turnout, defend democracy and defeat the far-right.

Their victory offers hope to progressive movements across Latin America facing a growing authoritarian offensive.

This election was marred by unprecedented intervention from Donald Trump and efforts by social media platforms to use their enormous power to help put Flávio Bolsonaro into office.

Securing a far-right government in Brazil is a key part of Trump’s attempt to turn the whole region back into the US’ backyard, not least to gain control over Brazil’s vast mineral resources, which are increasingly essential for advanced technologies and AI.

This victory sends a powerful message to the world: Trump and his far-right allies across the globe can be beaten!

However, a very real danger remains: the far-right may refuse to accept the election results. In recent years, Brazil has seen the ousting of elected President Dilma Rousseff (Lula’s former Chief of Staff) and the jailing of Lula himself to prevent him from running as a candidate by using false charges that were later overturned, while former President Jair Bolsonaro was jailed for his role in a coup after losing the 2022 election to Lula.

We welcome the British Government’s recognition of the results and message of congratulations to Lula on his victory, and believe all governments and progressive social movements around the world must remain vigilant against any attempt by Brazil’s far-right to overturn this democratic victory.
