“The people of the North of Ireland want to continue their transformational journey of peace and prosperity.”
By Sinn Féin
Lawmakers from across Europe, led by Sinn Féin MEPs Kathleen Funchion and Lynn Boylan, have signed a letter showing full solidarity with those protesting on the Garvaghy Road. The letter also calls for British Secretary of State, Chris Bryant, to revoke the decision permitting an Orange Order march to proceed down the Garvaghy Road.
Kathleen Funchion MEP said: “MEPs, from multiple groups across Ireland, Spain, Belgium, France, Sweden, Germany, Catalonia, the Basque Country, Galicia and Italy, have called on the British Secretary of State to take immediate action. The letter condemns the decision to allow an Orange Order march to proceed through the Garvaghy Road community. It also sends full solidarity from Europe to the residents and commends them for their dignified protest.
“It notes the importance of the Good Friday Agreement, the EU’s contribution to the Irish peace process, and the positive role the EU has played across many years. This widespread support shows that Europe stands firm with the people of the Garvaghy Road. Communities deserve to live in peace – free from sectarian hate and harassment. The people of the North of Ireland want to continue their transformational journey of peace and prosperity. The British Secretary of State must intervene to protect the peace that has been enjoyed by this community for the past 28 years.”
