The Campaign for Labour Party Democracy has released the following motion template for Labour members to submit to this year’s Labour Party Annual Conference.
Conference notes:
- On 7 August, the Guardian reported: “Leaders from 10 unions, including Unison, the UK’s largest, urged the prime minister to oppose further fighting in the Gulf to help bring down energy and fuel costs…. unions said Burnham must begin by revoking permission for the US to use RAF bases to launch airstrikes on Iran.”
- On 19 August the ONS announced inflation rose to 2.9% in July, following July’s rise in energy bills.
- The issue of Britain authorising the US to conduct war against Iran from British bases is not substantially addressed in the NPF Report.
- The US and Israel chose to start this war, that is disrupting the world’s food and energy supplies, catastrophically impacting parts of the Global South and hurting communities in Britain by raising the cost of living.
- British household energy and food bills have sharply risen since this war was launched and face further rises if the war continues.
Conference believes:
- Our government is correct to say it will focus on the cost of living and take measures to make life more affordable.
- This stated focus is undermined by continuing to authorise US air strikes on Iran from bases on British territories.
- Britain can play an important international role in de-escalating this conflict by withdrawing that authorisation.
- Conference calls on the government to revoke the authorisation for the US to use bases on British territory to conduct war against Iran.
