“The working class has nothing to gain and everything to lose by the poor and unemployed of one country killing and maiming the poor and unemployed of another.”

By the University and College Union (UCU)

Our education system, health, social and public services are being cut to pay for war.

Across the globe, war costs the lives of millions of working people. Wars undermine our democratic and human rights and speed up the ecological crisis.

Internationalism must be at the centre of trade unionism. The working class has nothing to gain and everything to lose by the poor and unemployed of one country killing and maiming the poor and unemployed of another.

At last year’s TUC conference delegates voted in support of a motion that set out a real alternative to increases in military spending.

UCU have tabled a motion at this year’s TUC conference that builds on the Wages not Weapons motion. It does so by advancing a vision of a lasting security based on decent jobs, quality public services, equality, climate action, democracy and peace.

We, the undersigned, support the UCU’s call:

  • for international solidarity and peace to be at the heart of the trade union movement
  • to build a campaign for sustained public investment in health, education, housing, social care, social security and climate action
  • to raise awareness of workers’ rights, including the right to conscientious objection
  • to oppose compulsory military service in the UK.
