“We call on Andy Burnham to make an important start… by restoring the Labour Whip to Diane Abbott.”
Individual members of Hackney North and Stoke Newington CLP have released the following statement for the year anniversary of Diane Abbott’s suspension from the Labour Party.
July 17th marks the one-year anniversary of the suspension of Diane Abbott MP from the Labour Party.
For almost 40 years, Diane has faithfully represented Hackney North & Stoke Newington in Parliament. At a time when Labour has lost support, she maintains extraordinary popularity, both among her constituents and among local Labour Party members. Her suspension may well have cost Labour votes in the recent local elections.
When Diane has disagreed with Labour leaderships – on NHS funding, on student grants and fees, on benefit cuts to the poorest and most vulnerable, on standing against racism and opposing attacks on asylum seekers, and on opposing Britain’s involvement in wars – she has been shown to be right and the Labour leadership wrong.
We, Labour members in Diane’s constituency, welcome Andy Burnham’s statement that Labour needs to change. We call on Andy Burnham to make an important start to that change by restoring the Labour Whip to Diane Abbott.
Listed below are former CLP officers who have signed the statement:
Sue Millman, former CLP Chair
Susan Fajana-Thomas, former CLP Chair
Barry Gray, former CLP Chair
Caroline Woodley, former Mayor of Hackney
Josephine Thwaites, CLP Women’s Officer
John Stewart, former Affiliated Trade Unions rep.
Dot Lewis, former CLP Disabled Members rep.
Frieda Schicker, former CLP Women’s Officer
George Binette, former CLP Trade Union Liaison Officer
And dozens of rank and file members from every branch in Hackney North and Stoke Newington CLP.
