“We need to demand that the next prime minister breaks with this failed strategy and stands up for our interests instead of rolling over for the US.”
By the Stop Trump Coalition
One of Keir Starmer’s last acts in office was to sign a medicines trade deal with the US, under severe pressure from Trump.
It’s a bad deal – another act of appeasement. Today’s Guardian front page reveals just how bad: British Medical Journal experts estimate that this deal could lead to more than 200,000 avoidable deaths.
That’s because the NHS will be forced to spend £45 billion on super-expensive US pharmaceuticals instead of essential services. The government claims that this will fund innovative new treatments – but the truth is that the money will go right into the profits of US Big Pharma corporations.
As Starmer leaves office and a new prime minister comes in, it’s important to highlight how he has consistently appeased Trump – even while sometimes publicly pretending not to.
Then we need to demand that the next prime minister breaks with this failed strategy and stands up for our interests instead of rolling over for the US.
You can sign the petition against this deal, initiated by Global Justice Now – who are part of the Stop Trump Coalition.
They are also working with the campaign Just Treatment on launching a legal challenge to the deal. You can support that here.
