Carol Turner explains why CND will be outside RAF Fairford on 25 April, calling for an end to the US-Israel’s illegal war on Iran and demanding US out of British bases
CND and Stop the War Coalition will join members of Fairford Action in a demonstration outside RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire this Saturday, 25 April, to call for an end to the war on Iran and express anger over the airbase being used by United States fighter jets taking part in the US-Israel war on Iran.
The decision to step up the protests at Fairford follows Trump’s disgraceful statement that he intends to wipe out an ‘entire civilisation’ – a thinly veiled threat by Trump to use nuclear weapons against Iran before the ceasefire came into effect. The protest comes at a crucial time in the faltering peace talks.
The conditional ceasefire agreed by the US and Iran to allow for further talks to end the war. As we go to press, US is escalating military attacks against shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, and Israel continues to bomb Lebanon. Neither of the US nor Iran look likely to begin the second round of talks due in Islamabad on Thursday.
There have been thousands of civilians casualties since the US-Irael bombing raids began at the end of February. Civilian infrastructure has been destroyed, including bridges, hospitals, schools, bridges, and residential areas.
Other British bases that have also been used in the US attacks on Iran. RAF Mildenhall in Sufolk has provided refuelling and logistical support, and nearby RAF Lakenheath has been a transit point for fighter jets and A-10 ‘tank buster’ aircraft en route to the Middle East. There is mounting evidence that US B61-12 nuclear gravity bombs have now arrived RAF Lakenheath.
As CND General Secretary Sophie Bolt points out: ‘Bases like Fairford and Lakenheath are the physical embodiment of Britain’s nuclear alliance with the United States. That’s why we’re calling to shut down the bases, and kick out Trump’s nukes from Britain!’
