Sue Levi Hughes addressed the Trump Not Welcome demonstration recently held in London on behalf of the Jewish Socialists’ Group (JSG) – you can read an edited version of her speech published below.
Other speakers have eloquently listed the horror of the Trump regime – for its poorest citizens and for the world. I will focus on the dangers for Jewish communities, both in America and around the world.
ICE, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, are fast becoming a secret police force – an essential element of a fascist state. ICE has used the pretext of combating antisemitism to target dissenters of the regime. Individuals and groups who support the rights of Palestinians, and are critical of the genocide in Israel, are targeted and slandered. This, of course, includes many Jewish organisations and individuals.
Trump has a long history of antisemitic rhetoric. He repeats antisemitic tropes and stereotypes and has ridiculed some Jewish Americans, accusing them of hating Israel because they don’t support his extremism.
Trump aligns with and emboldens dangerous right-wing extremists. He has refused to condemn white supremacy and instead incited right-wing extremists such as the Proud Boys – remember them? The ones who wore T-shirts with “SMWE” – Six Million Wasn’t Enough.
History has shown us that, when we live under the rule of dictators who accept no check on their authority, it spells danger for all minority groups including the Jewish community. We know that there can be no secure future for Jews, other minorities, working people and the unemployed under an economic system that promotes greed over need. A system personified by Trump.
We on the Jewish left join our Jewish comrades in New York City and endorse Zohran Mamdani for Mayor. Mamdani brings together all the diverse communities of New York by addressing the real challenges they face – the greed of landlords and billionaires that have made living in the city unaffordable. And when people of all backgrounds recognise that it is not the migrant that is exploiting them, they unite. This makes Mamdani very dangerous to Trump. We join his many supporters in America, and those like him across the world to fight for a better future. For an internationalist, socialist world free from war, poverty, and discrimination.
