Solidarity shut down Smithfield and Perry Barr sites in Birmingham on Friday, 25 July. A huge mobilisation organised by Strike Map supported by 29 organisations has seen the largest picket lines for a generation.

Strike Map co-founder Henry Fowler said: “Mass picketing is back. The trade union movement has shown it is at its most powerful when it acts together. Workers supporting workers. This is the second successful Megapicket in Birmingham and it is even bigger than last time, showing that everyone is behind these workers.”

‘Megapicket 2’ has been backed by many national trade unions including the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), who have been strong supporters of the strikers.

Steve Wright FBU general secretary commented, “At our recent conference Birmingham Bin Workers joined us. After hearing from these striking workers we raised £6,500 right there in the room. We are clear that both the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister need to intervene and help end this dispute. We continue to demand that the central government recognises its role in addressing the crisis in local Government funding.”

The Megapicket was supported by: Artists Union England, ASLEF, BFAWU, Blacklist Support Group, Birmingham TUC, British Medical Association, Campaign for Trade Union Freedom, Equity, FBU, GFTU, HCSA, NASUWT, National Education Union, NHS Workers Say No!, NSSN, PCS, Peace and Justice Project, POA, Psychotherapy and Counselling Union, Royal College of Podiatry, RMT, Security Industry Federation, Strike Map, Troublemakers at work, UCU, We Demand Change.
