“We hope that this landmark victory for the campaign for climate action will clear the way for future wins in the courts that will force the government to finally put people and planet before profit.”
By Jeremy Corbyn’s Peace and Justice Project
This morning, the Scottish court has ruled that the government approval for the Rosebank and Jackdaw oil sites in the North Sea was unlawful, in a momentous victory for climate campaigners in Britain and around the world.
The approval in question was made by the previous Conservative government in 2023. This new ruling places significant pressure on the new Labour government to halt drilling at these sites and invest in sustainable energy, our communities and a Green New Deal.
It is universally agreed and understood that opening new drilling fields is totally incompatible with our commitments to tackle the climate crisis and our obligations to numerous global accords on ensuring the long-term future of our planet.
Read more about this landmark ruling in The Good Fight, which includes reactions from Greenpeace, the Stop Rosebank campaign, Green Party co-leader Carla Denyer MP and Labour MP Nadia Whittome.
We hope that this landmark victory for the campaign for climate action will clear the way for future wins in the courts that will force the government to finally put people and planet before profit.
Peace & Justice Project will continue to support climate justice campaigns and hold the government to account for their disastrous failure to take action to secure our long-term and sustainable future on Earth. In the meantime, please support the Stop Rosebank campaign’s March action days by writing to your MP or MSP.
