“I commend all those who have campaigned for this moment and for the reality that the only route to a lasting peace lies with a free, independent and sovereign Palestinian state.”

Sinn Féin write on Ireland’s official recognition on the State of Palestine

Matt Carthy TD has described the announcement that Ireland will officially recognise the state of Palestine as a historic moment for Ireland and Palestine.

He also commended those who had campaigned for many years on this issue and called on the government to take the next logical steps by ensuring that Israel is held to account and meaningfully sanctioned for committing gross violations of international law across Palestine:

“It is now almost a decade since the Dáil unanimously supported a Sinn Féin motion to recognise the state of Palestine in December 2014.

This is a historic moment for Ireland and Palestine.

I commend all those who have campaigned for this moment and for the reality that the only route to a lasting peace lies with a free, independent and sovereign Palestinian state.

The state that Ireland will now officially recognise has long endured oppression, occupation, genocide and apartheid.

Ireland must follow this announcement by utilising every tool at their disposal to hold Israel to account and to demand full adherence to international law.

Israel must be held to account and meaningfully sanctioned for the ongoing gross violations of international law in Gaza and across Palestine.”
