We publish below for information a letter sent to Keir Starmer on March 16

Dear Keir

We write to you as the general secretaries of Labour affiliated trades unions.

We are writing to urge you to restore the whip to Diane Abbott MP.

The recent public emergence of incidents of racism directed towards her are deeply concerning and unacceptable. However the harrowing truth is that the disgusting comments directed at Ms Abbott by the Conservatives’ biggest donor are merely the tip of the iceberg, as she is continually subjected to huge volumes of racism, misogyny and abuse.

As a dedicated member of the Labour Party, Diane Abbott has tirelessly served her constituents and championed the working people of Britain throughout her 37 years in Parliament.

The Labour Party has rightly strongly criticised the abuse which has now publicly emerged, but we urge you to stand with Diane Abbott by restoring the whip to her, demonstrating our commitment to combating racism within our party and society at large.

We look forward to your swift action in reinstating the whip to Diane Abbott MP.

Best wishes,

Maryam Eslamdoust, General Secretary of TSSA
Dave Ward, General Secretary of CWU
Mick Whelan, General Secretary of ASLEF
Matt Wrack, General Secretary of FBU
