“Politicians of all colours need to make different choices, including scrapping their phony fiscal rules. It’s time to tackle the super-rich and the profiteers, not make workers pay for the failure of this broken economic model.”

Commentating on Labour’s response to today’s budget Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “It is all very well for Labour to endorse the chancellor’s tax cuts, but it needs to make it clear that desperately needed funding will still be provided for public services and investment. We can’t have Labour backing ‘Austerity Mk II’ if it wins the next election.

“The Institute of Fiscal Studies has stated that by 2028 an extra £20 billion will need to be invested in our public services to avoid yet more austerity. Without additional funding this will result in more misery for ordinary people and more real terms pay cuts for hard working public sector workers.

“Politicians of all colours need to make different choices, including scrapping their phony fiscal rules. It’s time to tackle the super-rich and the profiteers, not make workers pay for the failure of this broken economic model.

“Under my leadership, Unite will always back workers fighting to defend their living standards.”
