More than 250,000 people have signed a petition to support the nomination of healthcare workers in Gaza for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, citing their work in difficult and dangerous circumstances during Israel’s military assault on Gaza.

Richard Burgon, Labour MP for Leeds East and Secretary of the Socialist Campaign Group of Labour MPs, has supported the call by tabling an Early Day Motion in Parliament, recognising the work of healthcare professionals and the loss of over 300 health workers during the bombardment of Gaza so far.

The motion also encourages those who qualify to nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize, including parliamentarians, government ministers, professors, and members of the Institute of International Law, to nominate Gaza’s health workers ahead of the 31 January deadline.

That this House congratulates the more than 250,000 people who have signed a petition to support the nomination of health care workers in Gaza for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize; believes that health workers in Gaza have sought to save lives in the most difficult of circumstances and mourns the loss of the more than 300 health workers so far killed in Israel’s assault on Gaza; notes that the prize can be awarded to an organisation as well as up to three individuals; and encourages as many of those as possible who qualify to nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize, including parliamentarians, government ministers, professors and members of the Institute of International Law to do so ahead of the 31 January deadline.
