“The Government needs to recognise that having put money into local government and industry in order to keep jobs going… it has got to continue doing that as the economy begins to rebuild.”
Jeremy Corbyn.
In an exclusive interview with Labour Outlook to be published shortly, Jeremy Corbyn argues that if the Government doesn’t urgently u-turn on ending the furlough scheme it will lead to “lots of permanent job losses,” an accompanying “loss of income for a very large number of people,” and resulting in an “Autumn of enormous stress and chaos for many people.”
He adds that this situation will be made even worse by the fact that “even now local government doesn’t know what it’s income level is going to be [going forward] when 80% of local government income comes from central Government.”
Summing up the words and demands of trade unions in recent weeks, the MP for Islington North argues that “The Government needs to recognise that having put money into local government and industry in order to keep jobs going… it has got to continue doing that as the economy begins to rebuild,” and if it doesn’t we will see a jobs catastrophe and even more severe recession.
In terms of our campaigning in the next days and weeks he tells interviewer Laura McAlpine (Labour’s Parliamentary candidate in Harlow in the last General Election that it is vital “to get behind the union demands that have now been made for a continuation of the furlough scheme and investment in our economy including a Green New Deal for the future.”
