“People deserve better than an unelected PM, squatting in Number 10, after he & his MPs have ran the show for nine years & made things worse for working people… The sooner they’re out the better.”
Richard Burgon
We need a general election not only to move forward on Brexit, but also to elect a transformative Jeremy Corbyn-led government to solve the multiple crises caused by Tory austerity and blighting the lives of millions of people. This was the clear message of Richard Burgon MP in a number of media appearances this morning.
Rallying Labour members and supporters for the fight ahead, he made it clear that we want Boris Johnson and his Thatcherite mates out of Downing Street as soon as possible. On ITV’s ‘Good Morning Britain’ he said, “As soon as No deal is off the table, we want a General Election Called.”
He then added, “When we have a Labour Government, that Labour Government will hold a public vote so people can decide between a credible leave option and remain – because the Tory Brexit crisis is only one of the crises that the Tories have caused over the last 9 years. There’s homelessness, zero-hour contracts, the housing crisis, insecure jobs.. and all these things need sorting out. And they can’t be sorted out unless we get a transformative Labour Government… they’re not going to be sorted out by a continuation of 9 years of Tory government.”
Spelling out the position in detail on the BBC, he said that “If the EU responds [to the UK’s request for an extension] by agreeing an extension of a number of months, that means an extension that Boris Johnson in that time can’t push us out through a No-Deal Brexit. Given that, Labour will be calling for a General Election, once a no-deal is off the table.”
He added the reason for this was “because actually it is only a General Election which can, yes, sort out Brexit – because a Labour Government would hold a public vote between a credible leave option and remain to finally sort this out – but also sort out these Tory created crises after 9 years of austerity, which has hit living standards, public services and the rest of it.”
He then said how ”We don’t want to leave the Tories in power at all. We need the Tories out, so that people – for example – are no longer suffering due to universal credit, the housing crisis or anything else.”
He concluded by saying, “Let me make it clear I want Boris Johnson and his Thatcherite mates out of Downing Street and out of power as soon as possible. I would like to see Boris Johnson gone by Christmas. I think the people I represent, and the people of this country deserve better than an unelected Prime Minister, squatting in Number 10, after he and his MPs have ran the show for nine years and made things worse for working people across the country. The sooner they’re out the better.”
